From self-tracking to organ donation - freedom of choice: opportunity or imposition?

Prof. Dr. Nils Hoppe will participate as a panel speaker on Thursday, April 4, 2024, 6 p.m. in the atrium (main building) of Leibniz University Hannover.

About the event

Transplanting organs, diagnosing illnesses before birth, keeping a constant eye on your own health data on your wristband - science has made it possible. More possibilities and more knowledge also mean more freedom: to decide on therapies, whether a child is born, on one's own health-conscious behavior. But on what basis should we make these decisions? The data and facts are highly complex, the answers are never clear-cut, responsibility passes from doctors to laypeople. Freedom often becomes an imposition and an overwhelming demand.

What does it take - on the part of science and researchers - to give the people their authorship of their own lives (back)? Experts from various fields will speak on this topic. The panel discussion marks the start of Leibniz Universität Hannover's program of events in the Federal Ministry of Education and Research's Year of Science "Freedom".

Opening words: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Holger Blume, Vice President for Research and Transfer at LUH

Moderation: Hilde Weeg, journalist, Hanover
